A review of this movie appears in John Stanley's Revenge of the Creature Features Movie Guide (1988). I'm not naive enough to think that a review in a movie guide means the author has actually *seen* the movie, but I have more faith in Stanley than in others, and this sounds like he has:

"Black-oriented programmer, 'racist' by today's standards. Mantan Moreland portrays a black version of Philip Marlowe—down-and-out private eye, pursued by creditors, hired to find the missing whatever. Eventually, he gets tangled up with witchcraft idiots in a rundown mansion where the obligatory gorilla runs wild. William Beaudine directed."
