Storyline
After nearly two decades away from home and riding the waves of fame, Olivia (Diana Ross) returns to find her daughter Kayla (Brandy) and to reveal herself as the mother Kayla new knew. With well-places contracts and a desire to right a wrong past, Olivia helps Kayla realize her own dream of singing stardom. But their fragile mother-daughter bond is tested when Kayla's dreams of stardom become a reality. Together, they will discover that love is more powerful than ambition and family more important than fame.

Starring:
In New Orleans, young Kit Latimer (Bonita Granville), who loves and plays the African-American music of the city, moves to Chicago with her architect father, George (Adolphe Menjou). Over the next several years Kit discovers that the ragtime of her childhood has developed into jazz and continues performing. Struggling coronet player Johnny Schumacher (Jackie Cooper) befriends Kit, who is then arrested after her music incites a riot at a club. Upon her release, Kit forms a band with Johnny.
