Storyline
In this uplifting drama based on the memoir "The Water is Wide," Pat Conroy (Jon Voight) accepts a teaching position on an isolated island in South Carolina. There he finds a class of black students who are illiterate and want simple personal hygiene. Conroy contradicts the lax institutional standards and exposes his students to a wide range of topics. Still, those in power do not take kindly to his efforts to overturn their racist policies.

This is the story of a young man named T, a misunderstood loner who has escaped the heartless streets of New York's Lower East Side to make a life for himself on the rooftops of banded tenement buildings. T and the other homeless kids live by their wits at an empty lot they call the Garden of Eden. In his rock n' roll paradise, T encounters the alluring Elana. They are immediately attracted to each other, and their passion soon grows into an explosive love affair. Unexpectedly, T discovers that Elana is connected with a ruthless street gang of killers. When he confronts her with the truth, T is suddenly caught up in a deadly, heart-pounding struggle.
