Storyline Biography of Jackie Robinson, the first black major league baseball
player in the 20th century. Traces his career in the negro leagues and
the major leagues.
Storyline When a white patient in a hospital dies under the care of a black intern
(Sidney Poitier), the victim's racist brother (Richard Widmark) seeks
to destroy the doctor's career. Although the hospital's idealistic Chief
Resident (Stephen McNally) tries to diffuse the escalating tension, the
victim's ex-wife (Linda Darnell) seems to go along with the
vengeance-seeker, until she realizes she's on the wrong side.
Storyline Will Handy grows up in Memphis with his preacher father and his Aunt
Hagar. His father intends for him to use his musical gifts only in
church, but he can't stay away from the music of the streets and
workers. After he writes a theme song for a local politician, Gogo, a
speakeasy singer, convinces Will to be her accompanist. Will is
estranged from his father for many years while he writes and publishes
many blues songs. At last the family is reunited when Gogo brings them
to New York to see Will's music played by a symphony orchestra.
