As the world excitedly awaited what should have been a routine liftoff
for the space shuttle Challenger, equipment complications turned the
mission into a ticking time-bomb. Adding to the drama of the mission was
the presence of Christa McAuliffe (Karen Allen), a school teacher
chosen from hundreds of candidates to be the first civilian in space.
Based on the true story of the tragic space shuttle disaster, this compelling account offers a poignant look into the lives of the seven crew members during the months leading up to the launch. Joe Morton (Brother From Another Planet) stars as Dr. Ronald E. McNair. He was the second African-American in outer space.
Storyline Bette Davis is White Mama in this custom-made TV movie. Ms. Davis plays a
poverty-stricken widow who is too proud to go on welfare. Aware that
she can receive a steady income if she takes in a foster child, Davis
becomes surrogate mother to tough black teenager Ernest Harden Jr. The
relationship is shaky at best in the beginning, but soon foster mother
and foster "child" learn to love, respect and trust one another.
