The story, set in Kansas during the 1920s, covers less than a year in the life of a black teenager, and documents the veritable deluge of events which force him into sudden manhood. The family relationships and enmities, the fears, frustrations and ambitions of the black teenager in small-town America are explored with a strong statement about human values.

Storyline
The secretive leader of a black militant group, Jason Higgs (Poitier) plots a dangerous payroll robbery; the money is marked for a mysterious organization that benefits the children for jailed black men. When the heist goes horribly wrong, Higgs and his men go on the run, with the entire Philadelphia police force following their every move. Faced with betrayal on the streets of their own neighborhood, they turn to a white social worker for help, crossing the color lines in a last-ditch attempt at saving their lives.

When an American policeman named Lyedecker comes to Mexico to arrest Yaqui Joe for robbery, he finds himself detained by both an Indian revolution against the Mexican government... and the luscious figure of Joe's sidekick, Sarita! As the government steps up its plan for the Indians — total extermination — Joe's stolen money buys weapons for the battle, and Lyedecker joins the fray. But will it be enough to defeat the sadistic General Verdugo and his army?
