Hubert Laws is best known for his small group dinner jazz-style material. It's a sound that can easily become background music and is too smooth for modern tastes. This album is features one notable exception, the great late 70s funk instrumental 'School's Out (Benji's Theme)' and is worth its bargain-bin price tag for that track alone. The film starred Paul 'Gordon's War' Winfield and Cicely Tyson and was based on the novel by Alice Childress.

Afro Promo (1997)

Starring:
  • The Blaxploitation Era

This humorous and insightful documentary is composed exclusively of movie trailers promoting films which depict the lives of African-Americans. From the patronizing promotion for 1946 Disney film, The Song of the South to the hip, tongue-in-cheek promo for Putney Swope, the range of attitudes from the '40s through the '90s is clearly and entertainingly shown. Surprisingly, in the comparison, the promotions for the much-despised "blaxploitation" films of the 70's come off well.-allmovie

Black August (2007)

Starring:
  • Gary Dourdan
  • Darren Bridgett
  • Ezra Stanley
  • Vonetta McGee
Inmate activist George Lester Jackson’s (CSI's Gary Dourdan) short life became a flashpoint for revolution, igniting the bloodiest riot in San Quentin’s history. In a story ripped from history’s headlines, Black August traces Jackson’s spiritual journey and violent fate, from being sent up on a one-year-to-life sentence for robbing a gas station of $71, to galvanizing the Black Guerrilla Family with his incendiary book of letters, Soledad Brother, to the fierce August day when his younger brother Jonathan shocked the world by taking a California courtroom hostage to protest Jackson’s upcoming trial.

Change Of Mind (1969)

Starring:

  • Raymond St. Jacques
  • Susan Oliver
  • Janet MacLachlan
  • Leslie Nielsen

A married couple struggles to adjust when the husband's brain is transplanted into the skull of a black man. David Rowe (Raymond St. Jacques) is the white district attorney who must now live life as a black man. His wife Margaret (Susan Oliver) tries to deal with the transformation of her husband's appearance as David feels the stings of racial prejudice for the first time.

Sheriff Webb (Leslie Nielsen) is the local lawman who resents the district attorney, but after the sheriff kills his own black mistress, he must rely on David for his legal defense. Margaret has trouble being intimate with the man she knows is still her husband. David investigates the murder of the young black woman as his superiors, friends and family treat him differently. Although the premise is implausible, excellent acting helps make things more believable.-allmovie
