One Dark Night [a.k.a. Night Club Girl] (1939) [Lost Film]

Storyline
Mantan Moreland plays a lazy and shiftless father of two children who lets his wife support the family. He is continually insulted and annoyed by his in-laws who lives with him, and finally he does a disappearing act. Meanwhile, life goes on as usual, with an old suitor trying to marry Moreland's wife when it is believed he is dead. However, Moreland discovers a radium mine in his wanderings on the desert. Later he returns home, scares off his rival, buys a local nightclub, dresses up his family and all is forgiven.

Max de Mirecourt, celebrated French novelist, takes a vacation from his social-butterfly wife in Tunisia, where he meets beautiful Alwina, a barefoot hill shepherdess. To cure his writer's block, Max casts Alwina as heroine in a real-life 'Pygmalion' story. She reacts to civilized ways and emotions with charming simplicity. Now Max, stung by reports of his wife's affair with a dark-skinned maharajah, has the idea of launching Alwina in Paris society as a princess. Will civilization spoil her wild charms? Who will pair off with whom?

Part religious allegory and part church pageant, it presents the heavenly trial of a woman who has died giving childbirth out of wedlock. The jailer wears a mask death’s head mask and a nun’s habit with a skull and crossbones on the front and God sits on an altar, flanked by angels, while the devil attempts to convict the woman for her sins.
