Storyline
Michael (Jaleel White), a young San Diego police officer, is so thankful that his beautiful girlfriend Ashley (Jennia Fredrique Aponte) has accepted his marriage proposal that he decides to meet her family over Thanksgiving dinner. But nothing can prepare Michael for what Ashley's family is about to serve up: Her dad's a Black Panther, her brother's a gangbanger, and her grandparents...well, they still got! By dessert time, Michael has to wonder whether he has the stomach to handle his new perspective in-laws.

In the 1950s and '60s, young Ruben Santiago Jr. (Marcus Franklin) lives in a lively boardinghouse in the blue-collar town of Lackawanna, New York, with his father (Jimmy Smits) after his parents separated. Run by the motherly Nanny Crosby (S. Epatha Merkerson) and her taciturn husband (Terrance Dashon Howard), the boardinghouse residents, including The Bandleader (Mos Def), singer Pauline (Macy Gray), and cabaret owner Dick Barrymore (Ernie Hudson), teach the young boy about life and art.
